travel guide

Why take the train instead of flying?

For corridors under about 600 miles, a well-served train route often matches or beats the door-to-door time of a flight. Add in the two hours you'd otherwise spend at airport security, the trek out to the terminal, baggage wait, and the ride back from the destination airport to its city center, and a 90-minute hop suddenly becomes a five-hour project. High-speed rail lets you board downtown, work the whole way with real Wi-Fi and a power socket, and step off directly into your destination city.

Cost and carbon tilt the same direction. Advance rail fares on dense corridors (London–Paris, Madrid–Barcelona, Tokyo–Osaka, the Northeast U.S.) frequently undercut peak airfares once ancillary fees are factored in, and a rail journey typically produces a fraction of the per-passenger CO₂ of even a short-haul flight. Buses and coaches extend the same logic further downmarket — slower, but routinely 40–60% cheaper than the train and still greener per passenger-mile than driving solo.

Finally, rail and coach travel is genuinely more humane: no liquid restrictions, no laptop ban at takeoff, no gate-checked bags, and you keep your phone on. For business travelers who bill by the hour, that uninterrupted work time is the real value. For leisure travelers, the journey itself becomes part of the trip — scenery, a meal in the dining car, a chance to actually see the country you're crossing.

Best-served corridors

Ranked by the number of distinct transit options (rail, bus, ferry combinations) we index per corridor. Corridors with more options tend to be the most price-competitive and schedule-flexible — usually the corridors where the train genuinely beats the plane.
